Firstly, read my two posts in this thread. Secondly, search the web for reputable translation agencies and register with them as a freelance translator. And I repeat: be active, be active, be active. Don't just sit back and wait for the work to arrive.

Hi,
Im trying to get into freelance translating so that I can keep interning for non-profits while making money on the side. I have lots of experience, Im just not sure where to start. If you would be willing to give me advice and share some tips from your list, I would really appreciate it.

There is no universal recipe. Register in freelance translators directories, apply as a freelance translator at various agencies, select a few potential clients on the web and send them your CV, etc. etc.
That might be a good start.

I am wondering how to get started on your own. I have no personal contacts but I have a genuine ability to translate medical and insurance documents, because I have a substantial backgrund inthose fields. Thanks for any help

Well, I started as a freelancer years ago while still a university student. And I made some painful experience by learning things on the fly. Looking back, I think it would be reasonable to start as an in-house translator and going freelance after one or two years of in-house experience. Okay, you will be paid much less as an in-house translator, but on the other hand, the agency may provide you with free training in various CAT tools and you may learn some QA processes that will help you once you plan to establish yourself as a freelancer.

I personally went straight into freelance work. I was fortunate enough to get a really good client and worked my way up from there. I is always good to try to get your foot in the door of an International Organization. I strongly encourage to do this, it has landed me several translations within other International Organizations.Best of luck,sbastidas

If you mean working as an in-house agency translator, then the benefit is having a steady income while getting to translate all sorts of texts (handy because as a freelancer many clients will not give you specialised jobs unless you have experience) and gaining tons of experience, hopefully with the help of other in-house translators. In that kind of environment it can be a very good thing.Personally I now work for a few agencies as a freelancer, and I find it a good way to start your freelancing career - direct clients are harder to find and have their own quirks. Yes, agencies can rip you off and be a general pain but there are some good ones out there, and you do need to learn to look out for your own rights. Seems to me like the freelance community has a love-hate relationship with agencies... it's not all bad though.Satu

Elizabeth, I have never worked for an agency, but friends of mine have, and they say the experience was not a good one. They say they get paid too little, and on very tight deadlines.I have been working on my own for almost 20 years, and I rather do it this way.
