online translation site

Hello All,
Do any of you out there know of any good translation site for french - english-french? I ask because I have gone through most of them and the translation is almost always useless. There are many technical words that I wouldn't know even in english..Or if any one could suggest a good translation software and whether it can be purchassed online?

Does any serious client want to have hundreds of pages translated within minutes? No! If so, disasters occur such as the one when the McDonald's slogan "Finger lickin' good" was translated to Chinese as "Eat your fingers up".

I would agree though, that there are some market niches. For example, imagine a company who needs 2,000,000 words translated within two months and who doesn't care about quality much. He only needs that the translation is delivered in time and that the translation is understandable, not exactly of perfect formal style.

In this case I guess we can use machine translation to pretranslate content and to have some post-editing done by language professionals. But again, this may work for SOME language pairs and it may be completely useless for other ones.

Anyway, with the current state of technologies, I insist that a serious translator should never, never ever use machine translation.

I agree that translations done by humans is the best way to translate things, however, it won't be possible to translate hundreds of pages within a few minutes. And that can be only possible with the help of translations softwares only.

Try Oxford Hachette Eng-French and French-Eng dictionary on CD. I adore it. Plenty of examples of usage, thesaurus, idioms and what not.

you can use google translation just as a dictionery, just to get the meaning of some words and you make the translation your self

Yeap... absolutely it is true. Real "human" translation is the best thing you do to get the best result of your translation work. It flows naturally and easy to understand by the reader... Naomi.

You are still mixing up two or even more things. Let me explain:
- we all know what dictionaries are
- Google Translate and similar tools are MACHINE (AUTOMATIC) TRANSLATORS which might work in some language pairs but don't in most others
- WordFast, Trados, MemoQ, StarTransit, Across, OmegaT, Anaphraseus and others are COMPUTER-AIDED TRANSLATION TOOLS designed to reuse previously translated content. The translation stored in these tools (or more precisely in their TRANSLATION MEMORIES) are ALWAYS HUMAN TRANSLATIONS. Their pros?
+ speeding up the translation process (each sentece/segment has to be only translated once, all repetitions are translated automatically)
+ higher consistency in terminology
+ higher consistency in the translation itself (repeated sentences are always translated the same way)
+ access to more projects because most of them DO require CAT tools

I hope it is clear enough?

BTW, how long did you spend on WordFast? How long did you spend on reading the manual? Did you try to register for some webinars on CAT tools?

I have been translating documents for a few months and have found by getting the general idea after reading the text and then using an online dictionary or Google translate, I can generally get an accurate translation without the use of CAT tools. I downloaded a free version of Wordfast but found it too complicated to use. I believe it is better to use real "human" translation for the best results.

Unfortunately web based or machine translations are for the most part useless. You can find some classic examples in manuals of all kinds, where you end up asking yourself: "Who in this world has written this?" :w00t:

As mentioned beforehand, Trados and/or WordFast are Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tools, serving as memory banks for previously translated sentences or sections of text.

Frankly, I would rather translate "by hand" and use Trados as an assiting tool.

Trados as a dictionary? Trados as a Machine Translation tool? Oh, come on! Trados is a computer-aided translation (CAT) tool. During an interactive translation process it builds up a database of translated sentences (or segments) in the form of translation units; each unit consists of the source-language sentence and its target-language equivalent. These translation units can be later on reused (or recycled to use CAT terminology). But the translations created with Trados are always HUMAN translations!!!
You are probably looking for a good dictionary. I am sure there are some, just google for them. But please don't use machine translation, as this is almost always useless.
