I am getting started as a translator and I do not know about fees.

I got my degree as a scientific-literary translator in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I know that the range is between $ 0,04 and $0,18 but I require more  detailed information taking into account my qualifications and studies.

I look forward to your reply.

Julieta Riccio.

Hi, I'm also getting started as a freelance translator.  I'm fluent in Spanish, and fairly fluent in French and know some German and Japanese.  I would like to get some work going so that I can make a few dollars.  I think I would charge anywhere from .04 to .18 per word.  Isn't that a standard rate?

I have studied abroad at the University of Valencia, Spain.  Also, I am a hard worker.  I wish to be able to get some odd jobs translating to supplement my income as a tutor, teacher, and paraprofessional.

What is the going rate per word for translation of a document?  Also, If I'm being paid by the document I would like to know the rate ahead of time.  Surprises are not too good to me.  I like certainty (but I'm flexible)

Thanks,

Sean Hunter

Hi,

As you have doubts about the fees, I went over translators.base page and the standard rate  ranges between $0,07 and $0,09 for a translation from English into Spanish.

I hope you find this information useful.

Julieta.

Agency - minimum 70 EURO Cents a line (55 hits) (average 80, rush jobs 1 EUR.
Private - direct clients .80 to 1.20 EURO cents per line (more of course if ever possible)
(c. 10 to 14 cents a word, absolute minimum .08)
(technical translations using trados etc often a lot less)

Hi everyone,

I am also looking into setting myself up as a freelancer, based in the UK.

Can anyone tell me if I need to get a VAT number before I can invoive? As I haven't got much experience yet I wonder if it would be best to work for an agency first - would they be handling things like invoicing and annual tax return?

Also, do you need to get a translation software? If so, is Trados the best?

Everything seems rather daunting when you are trying to make a start without knowing anyone who's been through it before...

I'd really appreciate any hints and tips!

Karolin
