When I saw all this empty space I had to say something! I have been an
individual member of Tbase for a few years and I have found it very
businesslike in its dealings and I have had my share of interesting
work through its services. Thank you.
I have only been translating for the past ten years or so having worked
in another walk of life before that. Having an electrical engineering
background I have been very interested in the various CAT tools
available. To be honest, I am astonished at the huge variation in price
of these tools. I have now settled on OmegaT and Wordfast for general
translation and I then use CatsCradle for web page translation. Another
tool I have found extremely useful is Babylon which, for those of you
who don't know it, is equivalent to having a tableful of dictionaries!
For those starting out in translation and wondering about costs, OmegaT
is free thanks to those nice people working in open source programmes,
CatsCradle is also free, Wordfast and Babylon are very reasonably
priced and should frighten nobody!
I work primarily from French, English, and Latin to Irish (and
English). Even though there are not many Irish (Gaelic) <> other
language dictionaries, there are lots of resources available over the
Internet, and with Babylon, Wordfast and OmegaT, I am building up my
own glossaries..
I look forward to meeting other translators as the flow of mail builds up here.
Tony Pratschke.

| No offense, but I am not certain where to find the part that is so helpful in using Babylon translating. I suppose that it is good for objective and definite objects but for literature, it is not feasible. So far, I have not been able to find any translator for literature... If you can indicate me what part of the Babylon I should search..if I missed something..Thank you.

You said "I have now settled on OmegaT and Wordfast for general translation".
I have been using WordFast for a long time now.
Tell me, please, what can OmegaT add to WordFast?
Thanks in advance,
Carlos Ben-Ari

Hi! Here's the link http://www.omegat.org/omegat/omegat.html , the program is worth having a look at and, perhaps, use. I don't use it much - working with Wordfast. But I tried it several times and it worked fine. Certainly it takes some time to learn to use it.
Good luck
Victor

Thank you Tony for the thoughtful post, it will be helpful to all of us just starting to explore CAT tools. I also have an engineering background, I'll give these tools a try.
