Hello,I'm thinking of becoming a freelance translator, either working for agencies or individual clients. I'm about to set up a business - register the company name, get a tax number, etc. My question is - is this necessary or is it possible to work just as person, not a company? I am only just starting and have no experience whatsoever, that's why I can't predict how my 'business' will go - maybe I will only do one page per month. Have any of you worked as individuals? (But what if I make a mistake - will I be responsible with my personal assets, like mortgage?) Many thanks for your advice!

I would divide your post into several sections:
Of course, you can. Countless other translators work as freelancers, so why not you?
Be active, send your CVs, register with translation agencies online, provide samples of your work, provide short (no longer than 250 words) test translations. You will find that the amount of work will be gradually increasing. It is only then when I would recommend starting a translation agency, i.e. a real business. I wouldn't recommend trying to do so without any previous experience.
Of course you will. Going freelance doesn't relieve you from any financial responsibilities; it can only help you to manage them more easily by means of increased income. In my country, it is possible to get an insurance against temporary insolvency.

I would recommend starting as a freelancer if it's only you and you are translating into one language only and see how much business you get and if there is a need to incorporate later. If you are planning on translating into several languages or hiring people then I would suggest a business. Good luck!

Shure you lol. You should (IMHO) try a full membership first. Second to submit a bid. Why you will worry about that torrent of translation trade settings? BFN.
