Hello, I am trying to determine what is the average number of words a translator can complete per day if working on translating full time.

Thanks.

Karen

Depending on the expertise, but to my experience, an average of 2,000 words per day seems a good averageSmile

Hi Karen,
the daily output depends on a number of things:
1. Your expertise (as mentioned earlier in this thread);
2. Your experience;
3. Your computer and CAT tools literacy;
4. Your typing speed.

I believe a good average is around 2,500 words per day, although I can produce around 4,000 words a day, being a touch-typist (approx. 250 net keystrokes per minute).

I hope this helps.

I manage to deliver 2,000-5,000 words per day. Into mother tongue and with highest quality of course. Using trados brings me to 10,000 words.

Provided you have a good TM, I suppose. Which is, unfortunately, rarely the case...

Provided 7 years of experience and perfect technical conditions, that is:

a separate room;

a comfortable chair;

access to Internet with a high speed (for research on bilingual websites related to the theme of the text);

and printing facilities (for proofreading);

I produce on average 3000 words from my native language into the foreign on 8-hours working day basis.

as to the amount of words to be translated, it all depends what else you are doing and how well-trained your organism is, not to be overtired! if it is an urgent project, take a break after every 2 hours, even if you still seem to be OK: 2 hrs of work+1hr of break  = a reasonable style of work, healthy and non-harmful; the number of words translated varies with every interpreter. Depending on the subject. 5000 at most per day, I mean a day not a 8 hour shift

With 12 years of experience and good TMs, I normally translate 8,000 words per day from English into my native language and 7,000 back.
