Hello!

I need some help here. I am new to this site, and I would like to know if it is ok to translate for free or for little money at the beginning so people get to know my skills.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Celia

Hi Celia,
although I can see your good intentions, I don't think it is a good idea. Once you start working "for little money", it will be very hard to convince your clients otherwise after one year or so.
If I were you, I would start at somewhat reduced rates (say 85% of the rate usual for your language pair) while letting the clients, perhaps well-established translation agencies, know that you are a beginner. I would inform them like this:

Hello, I am a beginner and am willing to work for six months at reduced rates in exchange for regular feedbacks on my work.

I hope this helps a little.
