Hello and greetings to colleagues!
This new forum is great news! Undoubtedly, it will help many of us and I trust that it will be well supported!
Let me open the batting with a technical query: how is it possible to ascertain a word-count from a .pdf document? or a Powerpoint document? If the outsourcers can do it when quoting the size for a job, surely there must be a relatively easy way for us to do the same?
I look forward to reading comments and replies, and I extend my best wishes to all colleagues.

The easiest way to get a word-count from a PDF-file is to simply copy the text and paste it into a word-document and use the word-count function.
In the PDF-file, type Cntrl-a to mark the entire document. Type Cntrl-c to copy In the word document, type Cntrl-v, or select paste. In Tools, select word-count.
Same process applies to a Powerpoint presentation.

Dear Yves,
I use a program called Anycount and it gives you all the word counts in
a variety of formats (PowerPoint, PDF, Excel, etc). It's quite
convenient when you have numerous files in different format since you
just do them at the same time. If you do not want to buy it (this is
not an ad...) just go to Properties in the File menu for PowerPoint and
you will find the word count. For PDF files I really can't help you.
Best wishes to you.

If you only have Adobe Acrobat Reader, PDF documents can be protected
and not allow Copy & Paste. In that case, you could also use
any of the various counting tools.

Hi,
I haven't gotten around purchasing a full version of Adobe and can't seem to find a justification to do so, but there is a (pretty inexpensive) program called Scansoft, which actually converts pdf files into MS Word files and tends to keep the formatting. The drawback: it is not perfect and sometimes "sees" text, converting it into garbled text. It works with an OCR principle.
Now, since that one didn't work to perfection, while the Adobe Reader is open, you can do an "Edit", "Select All", which normally tends to select all the text in the document. Then you can "Copy" that text and just move over to MS Word and "Paste" it. Then all you can quickly do is "Tools", "Word Count", and that gives you the wordcount for the entire text. The thing is, that if the document has repetitive headers and/or footers, you do get your wordcount with those included. I tend to manually get rid of those and then do the wordcount.
I hope this helps!
Good luck!

Also, if PDF is not text but graphics, you can use OCR software.

Hi Yves,
Try Translator's Abacus, it's a free wordcount program for pdf, html,
rtf, text and word files. http://www.globalrendering.com/download.html
