Hi.

After doing  some research on doing Chinese to English translation I decided not to pursue it because it seems that  the work is too sporadic and the pay is too low . Also it seems that most of the jobs would be for English to Chinese which I technically should not do because I am a native English speaker. Another problem is that I do not have a degree - currently not feasible.

However, the other day I came across an opportunity to do volunteer translation. They currently don't have any opportunites for Chinese to English so I  am currently doing a English to Chinese translation volunteer test . I hope I pass - it will be good experience. It will not be a problem for me to find people to help edit my volunteer work. However, a large paid job is different.

Anyway, writing  this volunteer test has made me reconsider the possiblity of doing freelance translation. Is it true that Chinese to English or English to Chinese translation work is sporadic and low paid? Am I correct in assuming that most of the jobs are for English to Chinese translation? Would it be possible for me to support myself as a Chinese to English freelance translator?

Thanks,

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Where do you live? How many years experience you have on Chinese to English translation?

I was wondering for a long time. There should be really huge amount of job for translation from Chinese into English taking into account volumes of production in China? Cars, tools etc are produced in China, there should be tonns of manuals, isn't it? Or am I wrong? Dors anyone know the situation?

Jenny,

I have just read this post that you made in September. I was wondering, if you had the time, could you supply me with more information regarding this volunteer translator test. I am also a Chinese to English translator (native English speaker) who is just starting out in the business and am interested in doing pro bono work to get some more experience. Is this the type of test that can be taken anywhere, or is it just offered in your area? I am in Wisconsin, USA. Thanks in advance if you reply!

Aaron
