Dear all,
Could someone explain to me what is a website translation? I mean what the translator is suppose to translate in a website, what tools are involved and in what format the translated files should be delievered?

Hi, I'm new to this site but I've done a website translation once where the client sent me the webpages to be translated as html files (Internet Explorer, Mozilla...). I then copied the Page Source and saved it in a program such as Notepad, translated the words (not any of the html tags), saved it again in Notepad and in html and then double-checked the web page to make sure only the text was translated and I hadn't accidentally changed any html. hi, you'd better find some tools like UltraEdit, FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or Trados to ensure to translate only what need to be translated. These tools will color-mark those tags in webpage that should not be touched or Protect them (make them not editable unless you Unprotect them). However, some of the tags doo need to be changed to ensure correct display in target languages, for example, the "charset=UTF-8" tag for English webpage should be changed to "charset=gb2312" when translated into simplified chinese webpage, otherwise the webpage will not be displayed correctly in S chinese. most of these charset code can be found from IE (menu)->View->Code. Hope this can be helpful. :-)

I believe that Mozzila Suite 1.7 is bundled with a webpage editing function so that u can do the translation of the page and preview it before formally send it back to the client. Cheers!

Hey, you can edit any website in Notepad provided you know what is translatable and what isn't.

Any, and I mean ANY CAT tool can process HTML documents, whether it be Trados, CatsCradle, WordFast, MemoQ, across, StarTransit or anything else. But if you don't require any CAT tool to deal with repetitive text, you can use any text editor.

Hi If you are familiar with XHTML or HTML tags in the DOCTYPE tag you will see the language for example <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C// DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" http://www.w3.org./TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtm11- transitional.dtd As you can see the EN is for english for the tag language for content language you may use <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> for Spanish or utf-8 encoding

To translate a website, you have to translate not only the body of each web page (this is, the text you actually see on a browser), but also you must translate other "hidden" text, like metatags (text that describe the web page content) and alternative text (the text you see when you put the mouse over an image). So, when you estimate a website localization project, don't forget to take into account these items.I can recommend you a tool called TransAbacus (http://www.transabacus.com). This tool counts the number of words on a website, including the items I mentioned above, so the estimation is always complete.

As someone who has coded a few HTML pages, but has also translated, I would say that normally the visible text of website is placed between <body> and </body> 'tags' in HTML, but, yes, that is not all. There is <title> ( / in a 'tag' at the beginning means that this tag is 'closed' as in </title>, similarly if published at the end of it in some versions of markup languages as in tag for line break, used also for lines without text: <br/>, for example), placed in <head> section of webpage in HTML, and it is visible in the IE8 browser on top, this page has title "Translatorsbase.com Forum", for example. There is description of image, also, found normally in <img> tag as vaalue of attribute alt, normally in "quotation tags" as here in example "Insert Hyperlink" in the editor, similarly to what I see now as I type this. So called javascript has such texts, also, as seen on the right side in emoticons, the uppermost has simply " ". Needed is translation (if needed at all) of what is placed inside " " characters. Now there is link ALT text, also, found in <a> tag after href attribute in alt="" attribute value (inbetween " and " characters), or in older versions simply after equation character (=). Link saying "Website translation" atop this page has ALT text "Click to view Website translation" (visible when mouse pointer is over this two underlined words as I type. Similarly, <meta name="keywords" content=""> and
<meta name="description" content=""> tags' attributes' values are to be translated, but this is specific to languages and is part of SEO (especially multilingual), actually. Regarding definitions of what language content is in, I think it is not responsibility of translator to do this, at least not normally. Knowing this, practically everybody is more able to translate webpages. More information is published on http://www.w3.org/ and found following links to various versions of HTML, XML, RSS, WML and XHTML, among others. But surely names of colors are NOT tranlated, as they are (if found) normative and part of specifications, used everytime as they are specified. Practical advice for those, who are translating typing directly into HTML, would be to search aforementioned tags. I'd also recommend that translator should ask if anything isn't clear enough, perhaps on this forum. I tried to clarify this a little bit.
