Although I have been a translator for many years, I just purchased a computer in December of 2005 (my Christmas present to me!) and I'm interested in finding out how one can acquire the Wordfast software and how it is downloaded. On another website, a translator who is CAT tool savvy wrote an article in which he stated that Wordfast is free and just as good as TRADOS which for me is out of the question due to its high cost, for the time being and maybe forever. So I guess my question is, how can I download Wordfast for free, and if not, where do I find it? You can tell I still have a ways to go learning about computers!

Thank you, everyone, for your help!

Hi Femme and welcome!

I haven't tried Trados yet, but Wordfast is available at http://www.wordfast.net/

Truth be told, I consider myself fairly computer savvy, and I found
Wordfast not really easy to use at first - so read through the manual
and be patient.  I believe Wordfast has a forum on yahoo groups
that you may join and ask questions as well.

The one thing I failed to realize (being a newbie translator) is that
most of these tools will require you to create your own translations
(TM - translation memory), which are then stored in the software - so
if you translate something similar in the future, it will then give it
as a suggestion...

Microsoft has TM built into Word for some languages (right click and
select translate), but it is not super accurate -- lots of editing
required.

Good luck!

I realized that, too. I think we should find a way to share our own TM, otherwise it will take months before have any return from using Wordfast!
Do you know if is it possible to translate a single word or an expression? For example .... "for example --> per esempio"  (EN > IT)

It is very hard to find two similar phrases in my documents!
